A person was attacked with a hammer during a bike theft at a bus stop in Shrewsbury.

Two men wearing balaclavas and armed with a machete and hammer drove up to a group standing with a bike at Battlefield park and ride at about 22:30 BST on Monday, West Mercia Police said.

One person was hit with the hammer before the assailants took the bike and drove off.

A 35 year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in custody. Detectives are appealing for witnesses or people with dashcam or doorbell footage to contact them.

The force said members of the group that were threatened followed the van in their own vehicles as it drove towards Harlescott Lane.

The suspects, upon being chased, left the van and ran away.

"We understand that incidents of this nature bring concern to the local community, and I would like to assure the public that we are committed to finding those responsible," said Det Insp Dafydd Jones.

"We know from our initial inquiries that many people were in the area at the time of the robbery and I appeal to those who witnessed what happened to get in touch."
