A second man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a fatal house fire in Birmingham.

Daniel Gardner, 37, died in hospital after he was seriously injured in the blaze on Saxons Way, Highters Heath, shortly after 01:00 BST on Friday.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody.

Stephen Dale, 47, of Cherrywood Road, Birmingham, appeared at the city magistrates' court earlier charged with Mr Gardner's murder. He has been remanded in custody ahead of another hearing on Tuesday, West Midlands Police said.

Mr Gardner's family described him as a "devoted son, daddy, brother and nephew".

In a statement, the family said: "Words cannot describe the unbearable pain and devastation we all feel.

"You gave everything and never expected anything in return.

"Gives me comfort that you are with nan and grandad now who will once again look after you for me.

"My heart will always be broken but I hope I can find the strength to carry on without you."

A force spokesperson said officers were continuing to investigate the incident and have urged anyone with information or footage to get in touch.
