India’s Kolkata looks set to discontinue its iconic trams, which have been running since 1873. Over the past few decades, lack of investment, inadequate maintenance and a sharp fall in passengers have led to a decline in their status.
West Bengal’s transport minister, Snehasis Chakraborty, told local media that the move will ease the city’s traffic congestion. But activists and tram lovers are protesting against this, arguing that trams are environment-friendly and an important part of the city’s heritage.
