A city ferry company is launching free tours for community groups this winter.

Bristol Community Ferry Boats has announced a new initiative to support groups working with city residents, giving them a chance to access the city's waterways.

Running once a week, the tours are designed to offer groups a unique way to learn more about Bristol's maritime history and enjoy the sights from the water.

Roisin Tobin-Brooke, co-director of the ferry company, said the scheme was about "giving back to the community that has supported us for so many years".

"Our boats are an integral part of Bristol's identity, and we want to ensure that everyone, especially those who might not usually have the opportunity, can experience the joy of Bristol harbour," she added.

Changes Bristol, a mental health charity providing a support network for those suffering mental distress, is one of the groups which has previously taken part in the community trips.

Project worker Jen Witts said: “Many of our members are life long Bristol residents, yet many had not been on the ferry before.

"We've had several amazing trips out around the harbour and everyone enjoys them so much.

"They get to see the city from a different perspective, learn interesting and entertaining facts and have a wonderful social time with the other members."

Sara Ahmed-Qureshi, activity groups coordinator for Aid Box, an organisation supporting refugees and people seeking asylum in Bristol said: “A boat ride helps create positive memories and experiences, an environment that can reduce anxiety and depression, providing a temporary escape from their worries.

"These outings encourage interaction with local communities and help build friendships, where families and friends come together and share positive experiences that strengthen family ties after stressful events."

Community groups interested in getting involved are asked to contact the company as soon as possible to book in for the trips that will run from November to February.
