A man has been taken to hospital with a suspected stab wound to his chest after being attacked in York city centre.

North Yorkshire Police said officers were called by the ambulance service to an "incident" in the Walmgate area of the city at about 12:15 BST.

The force said a cordon had been put in place around the scene, with inquiries to trace the suspect under way.

A police spokesperson said it was believed those involved were known to each other and that the wider public were not at risk.
