Work to modernise a busy pedestrian crossing, described as "outdated" by the local authority, begins today and will last for three weeks.

The signalling at the Market Place crossing in Chippenham has reached the end of its service life and needs replacing with modern equipment, Wiltshire Council said.

Temporary traffic lights and a temporary pedestrian crossing will be in place on the town centre road while the work is carried out.

Councillor Ian Thorn, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: "The Market Place crossing in Chippenham is a busy spot for pedestrians, and this upgrade will help make sure it stays reliable and safe for everyone who uses it."

He added: "We'd like to thank residents and visitors for their patience while we carry out these essential improvements."
