Gloucestershire in Pictures: Scarecrows and halos

Two women stand outside their home next to their scarecrow display. They have made Carl, the old man from Disney film Up, as a scarecrow. He has a square head and wears a brown suit with a white shirt and bow tie. There are bunches of balloons tied to their black metal front gate, and there are posters attached to the railings with pictures of characters from the film. In the first full week of October, woodlands are transforming into burning spectacles as leaves turn from green to crisp browns, vibrant oranges, and warm yellows across the county.

Aside from the natural beauty that autumn brings, the season is being celebrated with fun activities, including in Longhope where residents have been showing off their creativity at the Forest of Dean village's scarecrow festival.

Perhaps the biggest news in the county this week came on Monday, when the death of literary legend Jilly Cooper, 88, was announced following a fall on Sunday.

Here's a round up of what happened this week in Gloucestershire, in pictures.

A vicar in a parish church, who is wearing a black jumper with a white West Highland Terrier pattern all over it and a grey gilet, bends slightly as she lights a candle in a church. There are large floral displays of red and yellow, which include sunflowers, and a pumpkin resting beneath a stained glass window.

Neighbours were among those paying tribute to Jilly Cooper, who lived in Bisley, this week.

Reverend Sue Murray lit a candle in Cooper's memory, and said she and other villagers "loved having her here".

Tewkesbury Mop Fair - thought to be the biggest street fair in the West of England - returned this week, with residents having lots of fun on the rides.

The tradition dates back to the 12th Century, when workers would take along a piece of equipment to represent their trade. Those with no specific skills would carry a mop head to show they were open to work, hoping to be spotted by a prospective employer.

More than 40,000 books have been moved from Gloucester Library to its new home at the University of Gloucestershire's City Campus, which welcomed its first students last month.

The final book was transported through Gloucester on Thursday via a human chain. The library is set to open in its new setting on Monday.

Cheltenham Town were defeated 1-0 by Bristol Rovers on Tuesday after Luke Thomas' second half strike was enough to decide the tie.

The club left the Vertu Trophy with a group game remaining, but manager Steve Cotterill said he was "chuffed to bits with the lads".

This ethereal image of a lunar halo was taken in Hillesley, a village in the Stroud District.

Also known as "moon dogs", the bright ring around the moon is caused by the refraction of moonlight when it passes through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.

This new photograph of the King taken at Highgrove House, his Gloucestershire residence, has been released by the King's Foundation for the Amazon documentary Finding Harmony: A King's Vision.

"Never has it been more important for the world to make a concerted effort to protect and prioritise our planet, and to restore our relationship with it," the King said about the project.
