Police officers have been assaulted while arresting a suspect following reports of a man brandishing a pole and damaging property.

Police were called to Bargain Booze on Tunstall Road in Biddulph, Stoke-on-Trent, at about 20:30 BST on Wednesday over complaints about a man causing damage there.

Shortly after, two officers were injured as they sough to make an arrest following a disturbance at the Crown and Cushion pub on High Street.

Staffordshire Police said a man, of no fixed address, was in custody, suspected of multiple offences including possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, criminal damage, affray and two counts of beating an emergency worker.

The injuries to the officers were not serious, the force added.

Earlier in the evening, three teenagers had reported being approached by a man with a pole who demanded their shoes and money, but nothing was taken and nobody was hurt.

A car, the staircase to a block of flats and a light were also damaged during the evening, said the force.
