A mountain rescue team helped to bring a couple's muddy misery to an end after they found themselves in trouble during a walk in the Peak District.

Kinder Mountain Resue Team said it was called out to reports a woman had become stuck up to her thighs in a peat bog on the Kinder plateau and had then lost her boots as her partner pulled her out.

The team said the woman walked for an hour in her socks as darkness descended before they called for help when she could no longer feel her feet.

Kinder team leader Alan Howarth sourced a pair of size six walking boots from his daughter which were taken up by rescuers who led the stricken pair to safety.

Emergency jelly babies

Mr Howarth said the couple had been a "long way" inside the plateau when they summoned help on 5 November.

He said: "When we arrived, they were clearly very cold and wet. We put them in a casualty shelter and started warming them up with hot drinks and jelly babies for energy.

"We were all pleased to see that she was able to warm up enough to walk back to our vehicles, as the alternative would have been a long stretcher carry going on until late at night.

"They had both made an impressive attempt to get down under their own steam, but in the end made the correct decision to call us."
