Two people arrested on suspicion of murder over the death of a baby in Stoke-on-Trent have been released on bail.

Police and paramedics were called to Sherwin Road, Burslem, shortly after 09:00 BST on 27 August following the death of a baby boy.

A woman, 26, and man, 25, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday, having previously been arrested on 30 August on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child.

Both have been bailed with strict conditions as the investigation continues, said Staffordshire Police.

People are being urged not to speculate about the case on social media, with detectives saying it would cause unnecessary upset and be "extremely unhelpful."

Specialist officers are supporting the baby's family as work continues to establish the circumstances around his death.

"This is a distressing incident which will have shocked the local community," said Det Insp Gina Pope, who is leading the investigation.
