Staff sergeant instructor Alex McCullough is remembered by colleagues for his impressive moustache

A group of army cadets and volunteers have been growing moustaches in tribute to a former colleague.

Staff sergeant instructor Alex McCullough from Evesham died in January, age 23, following a second diagnosis of cancer.

He was described by colleagues at the Hereford & Worcester Army Cadet Force (HWACF) as being devoted to his detachment in Worcester - he was voted as the cadets' favourite instructor in December 2021.

So far, the group have raised more than £400 in sponsorship for the Teenage Cancer Trust by growing their moustaches.

"Every 'tache will be a show of support and remembrance," said HWACF assistant commandant (planning) major Matt Burrows.

"Mac was a phenomenal character. A proud volunteer, a natural on stage, a loyal friend to the core, and, of course, a man with a moustache that deserved a rank of its own."

He added: "Thank you so much to everyone who has donated already; your support is greatly appreciated."

Mr McCullough became an adult volunteer with HWACF in 2020 after completing his cadet career at 18 at the rank of cadet company sergeant major.

This year's annual residential camp will be the first after his death.

Husband and wife team lieutenant Geraldine Miller and staff sergeant instructor Simon Miller both commanded Mr McCullough as a cadet and said they had watched him bloom in the force.

"To say we miss him would be the understatement of the century," they said.

"Mac exemplified what children and adults can achieve in the Army Cadets, so it's certain HWACF would've remained one of his core passions.

"Doing this [growing moustaches] allows us to remember the positive impact he had on young people in our community and celebrate the huge personality we so sorely miss."
