Climate hub launches to help 'positive action'

A new climate hub has been created to teach people about the environment and sustainability.

Charity Climate Hub Bath and North East Somerset opened the centre on Saturday in the city's old bus station's ticket office.

The charity aims for it to be a grassroots space where people can learn more about and engage with the difficult challenges of climate change and nature loss.

Mel Clarke, chair of trustees, said: "There will be a wealth of resources and information,  including displays about climate science, the importance of connecting with nature, sustainable fashion, ‘greenwashing’ and many more."

She said the site will be open every day: "There will be a children’s area, and library, as well as information about local nature and environment-related events.

"We’ll also be inviting other ‘green’ groups to join us each month to promote their work."

The Climate Hub BANES started four years ago as a monthly pop-up in Kingsmead Square, with occasional weekends in council pop-up shops.

The group estimate they have connected with more than 1,000 people sharing top tips for positive action.

Trustee Mandy Lake, who has led the work with First Bus to bring the hub to the bus station said: "This has taken a lot of work from ourselves as trustees, and also the commitment and enthusiasm of Thomas Hughes of First Bus in Bath to make this work."

Rachael Wells, the hub’s project development co-ordinator, said: "Creating the new climate hub has been a real community effort, built on the commitment of our trustees, volunteers, and partners who believe deeply in giving Bath and North East Somerset a dedicated space for climate action.

"With various workshops, events, and resources, the hub will be a place for everyone to come together, share knowledge, and take steps to reduce our carbon footprint, all while building resilience in the face of a changing climate."

She said it aimed to empower residents and foster a community where people can turn their climate concerns into real change.
