Firefighters remain at the scene of a fire which broke out inside a derelict wine bar in Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire, which began on Tuesday, was under control but firefighters were unable to enter the building.

They said the alarm was raised just after 05:45 GMT when smoke and flames were seen coming out of the former Yates Wine Bar on Brockley Square.

At its height, about 60 firefighters were working to contain the blaze, the fire service said.

A large cordon was still in place at 18:00 GMT and the fire service said they expected to be in the area for some time while they worked to bring the fire to a conclusion.

People nearby were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution due to excess smoke coming from the building.

The cause of the fire was yet to be determined, the fire service said.
