Warning over con artist posing as detective

A warning has been issued after a telephone fraudster tried to fleece a man in his 80s by pretending to be a police detective.
A vulnerable man in Bolsover took a call from a criminal on Monday, who said he was a detective based in Chesterfield investigating money being taken from the intended victim’s account.
The elderly man withdrew “thousands” in cash from an ATM but before he could hand it over, a relative stepped in to stop the scam.
Derbyshire Police has now issued a warning over courier fraud scams which they say are “sadly all too common”.
Their Bolsover and Clowne safer neighbourhood team said a number of residents had been contacted recently by somebody impersonating the police.
'Consider carefully'
A force spokesperson said they were warning people to be on their guard.
They said: “Known as courier fraud, this type of incident is sadly all too common.
“There are some easy ways to help protect you and your loved ones from falling victim to this type of crime.
“Stop before clicking a link, giving your information or following the instructions from the caller. Think about what they’re asking for, and why they say they need it. Banking and personal information is very valuable so consider carefully before giving any details.
“Tell another person or organisation. If you’re still not sure about this request, talk to someone you trust – if you’re ever in doubt, try and verify what’s being asked and look for further advice.”
