DS Smith is closing its Louth site and the majority of staff will leave this week

A major employer in Louth is closing its doors and making 70 roles redundant, it has confirmed.

Packaging firm DS Smith has begun a phased closure of its sheet-feeding operation and the majority of staff will leave this week.

A skeleton crew would remain at the Windsor Road site until it closes in August.

A spokesperson said there was “no viable alternative” to keeping the site open.

The site’s main production will cease today.

In a statement to the BBC, DS Smith said: “A period of collective consultation has been undertaken with the Trade Union and employee representatives at our sheetfeeding site in Louth.

'Difficult decision'

“Unfortunately, there has been no viable alternative business proposals presented during this process, and we have therefore taken the difficult decision to proceed with the proposal to close the site.

“We will now focus our efforts on supporting all those employees impacted by this decision.”
