Fly-tipping fines are set to increase to £1,000

A council is planning to more than double the amount it fines people for fly-tipping and littering.

Warrington Council will increase litter penalties from £100 to £250.

Penalties for fly-tippers will go up from £400 to £1,000.

A report to councillors said fixed penalty notices would allow fly-tipping incidents to be dealt with in a "more efficient, cost-effective and proportionate manner".

The council is set to continue to offer a discounted penalty for payments made in 10 days.

In its report, it said it could not guarantee how much it would bring in from fines.

It added that as more people followed the rules, the income generated would decrease.

According to government statistics, there were 997 incidents of fly-tipping in 2022-23 in Warrington - down from 1,073 in the year before.

The most serious fly-tipping offences can result in criminal prosecution.

The plans are set to be signed off by Warrington Council’s Cabinet on Monday., external
