Station quarter scheme begins with gyratory work

Work to improve the area outside Shrewsbury railway station has begun.

Wider pavements, new crossings, benches and cycle routes are being introduced with work starting at Castle Foregate and Howard Street.

Residents and commuters have been warned to expect delays in the area, and have been encouraged to use alternative routes or means of transport.

The scheme, which is externally funded, will have eight phases and should be completed by next summer.

The left-hand lane on Castle Foregate to the front of the station will be closed, and temporary traffic lights will be in place at the Howard Street junction.

A new 20mph speed limit through the station gyratory area will also be implemented.

Working hours will be between 07:00 BST and 18:00 BST, and there will be signage around the town.

Matt Johnson from Shropshire Council said the work would enhance the area, make it easier for people to travel though the area, and improve accessibility.

"The town centre will very much be open for business during the work," he said.

"We encourage people to continue visiting the town, but to consider using alternative routes if they can, or to use alternative modes of travel," he added.
