Residents in a Derbyshire village are being offered free water butts to help cut the risk of flooding.

Severn Trent Water is aiming to fit about 600 water butts to properties in Bonsall as part of its drive to help locations with a history of flooding,

The storage units cut the amount of surface water running into streams and rivers during periods of heavy rain.

Severn Trent plans plans to give away 8,000 butts across its operational area in the coming months.

Staff have been visiting the Derbyshire Dales village to find out which residents wanted the butts fitted.

Matt Lewis, from the firm, said: “Having a water butt installed is a really simple step that people can take towards helping to prevent excess surface water entering the sewer system and causing overflow spills or flooding issues."

Hairdresser Siobhan Haymes has backed the scheme

Siobhan Haymes, who runs a hair salon from her house in Bonsall, has signed up for one of the water butts.

"I think it is an absolutely fabulous idea," she told the BBC.

"I shall definitely be participating and I shall be letting people know about it.

"We have had a lot of flooding in the village over the last few years - especially in the park area and down the main street - and there has been a lot of properties affected by this flooding."
