Care home facing closure despite opposition

A care home is facing closure despite hundreds of people signing a petition asking for it to remain open.

A report to Cumberland Council suggested Moot Lodge in Brampton, Cumbria had inadequate facilities and residents did not have access to safe outdoor spaces.

It also stated that it would cost too much to refurbish an "ageing building".

However, opponents to the closure told a public consultation that they were worried about the impact of the closure on existing residents.

The council said it would make a decision on the facility's future on 23 July 2024.

Moot Lodge has 18 registered beds and is currently home to 10 people.

Almost 300 people took part in a public consultation, external about its future with 86% of them against its closure.

In addition 673 people signed an online petition , external calling for the home to stay open saying it was "an important part of the town".

In response the council said Brampton had two other "well-equipped" care homes and its mission was to provide "compassionate care that supports the wellbeing and independence of all residents".

The authority added that it understood the concerns raised and its executive would ensure that the decision "considered these factors carefully”.
