A suspect has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Greenock.

Alexander Paul McQuillan made no plea after appearing at Paisley Sheriff Court over the death of Michael Beaton on Sunday.

Mr Beaton was found with serious injuries in the town's Drumfrochar Road at about 19:20.

The 35-year-old was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but died a few hours later.

Mr McQuillan, 25, was also charged with the theft of a motor vehicle and threatening and abusive behaviour over the incident.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in court again within the next eight days.
