Three people have been convicted over what police described as a "vicious" attack on a man with a claw hammer.

Ben Williams, 32, Tamara Matthews, 23 and Leonardo Davis, 23, entered the victim's home in Eastgate, Peterborough, on 2 April.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary said he suffered "catastrophic" head injuries and was "lucky to be alive".

On Thursday, Williams, of no fixed address, was found guilty of attempted murder. Both Matthews and Davis, of Shrewsbury Avenue, Woodston, were found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

'Lucky'

The jury at Cambridge Crown Court heard how the victim rang 999, stating people had broken into his home and were attacking him, before the line went quiet

As police arrived, through an upstairs window they could see Matthews and a man attacking the victim while shouting abuse.

Mathews was arrested at the scene, while Williams and Davis were intercepted at Norwich railway station.

The three were found guilty following a 14-day trial.

Det Con Lauren Easton said: "This was an extremely vicious attack believed to have been over an incident involving family members of Matthews', which left the victim with a brain haemorrhage, bruising and swelling to his face and arms, as well as lacerations to his scalp.

"While not fully recovered, he is lucky to be alive and that he managed to call 999 and alert us to the intruders in his house."

Sentencing is due to take place at Cambridge Crown Court on 2 February.
