Passenger dies in crash between two cars

A woman aged in her 80s has died in a car crash.
It happened just before 08:40 GMT on Thursday, on the B6279 Staindrop Road between Darlington and Summerhouse, Durham.
The woman, a passenger in a Mercedes, died at the scene, while its driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.
The female driver of a BMW, travelling in the opposite direction, was not hurt.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
The road was closed for several hours while an investigation was carried out.
The family of the woman who died is being supported by specialist officers, police said.
