Plans to convert an old textile mill in the Borders into housing are being recommended for approval despite concerns about the impact on allotments.

The March Street site in Peebles was at the centre of a dispute between the community and its former owner Moorbrook Textiles.

Allotment holders - who were offered fewer plots on an alternative site - won their fight after going to the Scottish government.

New owners Whiteburn Projects have now come forward with a fresh plan for 50 houses on the land.

They have held meetings with allotment holder groups but there remain concerns about the loss of five out of 52 plots and the impact on another 15.

The proposals for the old mill site - which ceased operation about a decade ago - include both detached and semi-detached houses as well as flats.

Objections have been made by a number of gardeners as well as the town's community council and civic society.

However, planning officers have recommended, external the full application for approval when Scottish Borders Council's planning committee meets on 5 February.
