A blockage in a West Sussex sewer which was causing a "horrible" smell in the local town has been cleared, Southern Water has said.

The pipe, at the Albion Street wastewater pumping station, has been causing a stench in the town of Southwick for the past few months.

Southern Water said it had cleared the blockage on Friday and its teams would continue to monitor the site.

The Southern Water spokesperson said the blockage had been caused by items which had been flushed getting caught up in the pipes.

The spokesperson added: "We faced major challenges including an entire scaffolding plank which had to be broken up in place, articles of clothing and large amounts of unflushables, fat, oil and grease, wet wipes and other debris."
