A man has been arrested after police pursued a van through snow on rural roads.

Police spotted the vehicle at about 01:45 GMT on Friday, in Flixton near Filey, before the driver accelerated away, according to officers.

They followed the van for about 30 minutes before a stinger device was used to puncture its tyres and bring it to a stop.

The driver tried to run off but was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drug offences.

The pursuit took place at "fairly low speeds" as a result of the icy conditions, North Yorkshire Police said.

The van headed towards Grindale before the stinger was deployed in Burton Fleming.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of suspected class A and class B drugs, drug driving and failing to stop for police.

He remains in custody.

Ch Insp Tom Ibbetson said officers worked "around the clock in any conditions to target the people who cause the most harm to us and our communities".
