The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across Kent, Surrey and Sussex until Sunday evening.
The warning was in place at 07:00 BST and is predicted to end at 19:00 BST.
Met Office said 15-25mm of rain was expected quite widely and much of this "falling within two or three hours at any given place".
It added that where repeated thunderstorms occur, locally higher peaks of 40-60mm were possible.
According to the Met Office, there is a likelihood of short term loss of power.
Flooding may also occur and it advises residents to check if their area is at risk of flash flooding and to take necessary precautions including a flood plan and emergency kit.
It also advises residents to check road conditions and train services before travel as there may be delays.
