Primark is set to move its store in Derby from the Cathedral Quarter to the Derbion shopping centre.

Derby was the location for the high street giant's first UK store in 1974.

A Derbion spokesperson said the proposed store on level one of the shopping centre will have its own entrance from Albion Street.

The clothing store will stay open at its current spot in Cornmarket until the new store opens in 2027, they added.

Primark officially opened its doors on 26 September 1974 at the Babington Lane shop - making it the first Primark in the UK - although it had traded in the city since 1973 under the name Penneys.

American retailer JC Penney held the rights to use the name in the UK, so the store was renamed as Primark, but the business still trades as Penneys in Ireland.

Primark Derby then moved to the Eagle Centre in 1984, where it remained until 2005 before relocating to its current location in Cornmarket three years later.

Derbion said it had been working with other retailers at the Albion Street end including Superdrug, Iceland and H Samuel to relocate them to other parts of the shopping centre in preparation for the move.
