A man has been found not guilty of killing a father-of-two who died six weeks after a night time brawl in Brighton.

Anthony Barrigan, 44, died unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism weeks after the June 2022 incident.

Lucian Sorenau, 32 and from Romania, has been found not guilty of manslaughter and of assaulting Mr Barrigan's girlfriend after a five day trial at Hove Crown Court.

The jury found Sorenau guilty of affray and he will be sentenced next month.

Police were called to a delivery bay in central Brighton at about 22:30 BST on 18 June, 2022, following reports of an assault on Mr Barrigan and his girlfriend, Sarah Chollerton.

Six weeks later, a blood clot caused by an injury sustained in the incident travelled from his ankle to his lungs.

Paramedics were unable to save Mr Barrigan after he collapsed at home.

Two years after the incident, Sorenau was charged with manslaughter, which he denied.

He told Sussex Police he was acting in self defence after refusing to give Ms Chollerton a light for her cigarette.
