A fire has broken out at a recycling centre in Shrewsbury.

It started shortly before 05:00 BST at the Veolia site on Battlefield Enterprise Park.

About 30 firefighters were deployed at its peak. The blaze was still ongoing on Saturday afternoon, but Shropshire fire and Rescue Service said it was under control and there are no casulaties.

The fire was initially reported as involving 80 tonnes of waste, but Mark Price, area commander at the fire service, said crews arrived to find one bale alight.

He said crews were likely to be at the scene for some time due to the amount of smoke in the building but the incident was "contained".

The fire service has advised people living nearby to close their windows and doors, although Mr Price said smoke levels were minimal.
