A Peterborough gymnast said winning a gold medal "meant the world" to him as he was welcomed back to his home club in Cambridgeshire.

Jake Jarman, from Peterborough, won gold in the men's floor final at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, last month.

He returned to Huntingdon Gymnastics Club, on Wednesday, for the first time since his achievement.

"To be home with a medal around my neck - and it is a gold medal as well - it means the world to me and I am incredibly proud," he said.

He said his next step was focusing on training ahead of the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships next year.

Samir Zitouni, a rail worker credited with saving multiple lives during a mass stabbing on a train, has woken in hospital and spoken with his wife for the first time.

The 48-year-old was a member of the catering crew on the Doncaster to London King's Cross service on 1 November when an attacker struck as it passed through Cambridgeshire.

The actions of the crew member - who suffered serious injuries - were described as "nothing short of heroic" by British Transport Police.

A Go Fund Me page, set up with the Zitouni family's approval, said on Friday "his wife has shared the wonderful news that Sam woke up briefly yesterday, and she was able to speak with him for a short time".

He was one of 11 people treated for injuries after the attack on the 18:25 GMT LNER service.

Higgsy's in Yaxley reopened after five-weeks of transformation works

A family-run burger shed in Yaxley near Peterborough destroyed in a suspected arson attack has reopened thanks to "overwhelming" support from customers, the owners have said.

Higgsy's, at Norman Cross, was damaged overnight on 30 September.

Owner Adam Miller said the premises were "completely gutted", leaving him and his partner Amber Higgs "fearful for its future".

But about £8,000 was raised by local businesses and customers to help rebuild it — a response Mr Miller described as "fantastic".

Rare Bronze and Iron Age log boats unearthed upstream from a settlement dubbed "Britain's Pompeii" have gone on display for the first time at Peterborough's Flag Fen Archaeology Park.

The vessels have been painstakingly conserved since their discovery at Must Farm quarry in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, between 2011 and 2012.

Three of the nine excavated boats form the heart of a new permanent exhibition at Flag Fen.

"This is our heritage, this is what our ancestors were doing 3,000 years ago," said general manager Jacqueline Mooney.

Hundreds of e-scooters have been seized across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in the past year

More than 330 e-scooters have been seized across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough since January, police have said.

Cambridgeshire Police released the figures for the areas as a warning against buying them as Christmas presents.

"E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles and those riding them need to have a driving licence and insurance when using them on public roads and in [public] spaces," said PC AJ Boddington, the force's casualty reduction officer.

PC Boddington warned that anyone who received an e-scooter and used it on public roads and in public spaces could see it taken away.

Peterborough City Council discussed its budget overspend at a meeting this week

The city council revealed its budget overspend is predicted to be worse than previously thought.

It was put down to savings not being made as quickly as hoped.

Meanwhile, the unfinished Hilton Hotel will cost £14m to complete.

The city council borrowed £15m from the government to loan to the developers in 2017. The developers went bust in 2023.

And the introduction of bus franchising, a system where bus routes and fares are controlled by the local authority, has been delayed by a year.

A meeting at Peterborough City Council heard those plans were made on the basis the mayoral council tax precept would increase, but new Conservative mayor Paul Bristow pledged to freeze it when he was elected in May.
