Fraudsters use late broadcaster's profile in scam

A warning has been issued by police after the profiles of a late broadcaster and the bailiff of Jersey were used by fraudsters in an online scam.

The States of Jersey Police said it had been "alerted to a crypto currency fraud involving the late Gary Burgess and the Bailiff, Sir Timothy le Cocq".

"Unfortunately, these types of frauds are becoming ever more common and especially challenging and compelling when they use persons well known in a community," the force said.

The renowned Channel Islands broadcaster Mr Burgess, 46, died in 2022 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in November 2020.

States of Jersey Police said people "should not be fooled by 'get rich quick' schemes" and urged islanders to "stop, think fraud and be ever more suspicious" when potentially handing over money.

"If you are interested in any form of investment then undertake your own research as opposed to following such advice or adverts," it added.

If anyone has been a victim of fraud they should report it to their bank and the police.
