A 100-year-old home could be demolished to make way for new flats in Wolverhampton.

The move would see a four-bedroom detached home in Coalway Road, Penn, knocked down and replaced with a three-storey building with nine one and two-bed flats.

An application by Stoneleigh Architectural Services said the building had been vacant for "some time" and the developer had looked at adding 'extensions' and converting it into flats, as well as separate plans to build bungalows and new homes.

But those plans were deemed an insufficient use of the land, planning applications stated, and flats were the "most suitable, sustainable, energy efficient and attractive development."

The building, near to Woodfield Primary School, was believed to have been sold last November for £390,000.

A statement included with the application said the proposals would make "efficient use" of previously developed landscaping for affordable housing.

Plans for the site, next to Coalway Road Dental Surgery, include nine parking spaces.

The outline application would "offer the opportunity for the subsequent design" of a residential scheme, with new and improved landscaping features, the statement said.

"The development will provide an attractive location to live, close to amenities and providing options for travel to these amenities and wider destinations by modes other than the private car," it added.

"It is considered that the development proposal is entirely appropriate and acceptable in planning terms."
