A fire at a recycling yard in Ilkeston has caused large plumes of smoke to billow above the town.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was currently dealing with a fire at the centre in Griffon Road.

Ward Recycling confirmed the fire started on its metal recycling and waste management facility and that everyone on site was safe.

Operations director Donald Ward said in a statement the fire began in the vehicle depollution area where scrap vehicles were processed and recycled and "was quickly contained".

The fire service has advised people to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.

"Due to smoke from the fire, please keep windows and doors closed in the area," a service statement added.

Mr Ward's statement added: "The safety of our colleagues and the local community is paramount.

"A full investigation is under way with the appropriate authorities and we will be cooperating fully to understand the circumstances around the incident."
