A town centre regeneration programme in Surrey has taken another step forward with a planning application submitted for the conversion of two council-owned buildings into a riverside redevelopment.

Mole Valley District Council's plans for the site in Leatherhead include the demolition of Claire House and James House in Bridge Street.

Retirement property specialists McCarthy Stone wants to create 37 residential units, a ground floor cafe and community space.

A council spokesperson described it as a "landmark mixed-use riverside development".

The plans include improvements to the car park and landscaping the area to the front of the building.

Councillor Keira Vyvyan-Robinson, cabinet member for property and projects, said: "The project will improve the western gateway to the town and enhance the area around the River Mole.

"The application marks the next step towards the regeneration of the area and enhancement of the riverside area, a key project of Transform Leatherhead."

Mole Valley District Council adopted its local plan in October, giving the green light to 6,000 new homes.
