By-election announced to replace 'father of council'

A by-election has been announced following the death of the longest serving councillor on Cambridgeshire County Council.

Mac McGuire's family revealed his death earlier this year.

The Conservative was first elected on to the council in 1985.

People in the Yaxley and Farcet division are due to go to the polls on 21 March.

The candidates have been revealed as:

  • Kev Gulson, Conservative

  • Sally Ann Howell, independent

  • Richard Ilett, Labour

  • Ellisa Westerman, Green

  • Andrew Richard Wood, Liberal Democrats

The polls are due to open at 07:00 GMT and close at 22:00, external.

At a council meeting on 13 February, members agreed to posthumously award Mr McGuire with the title of Honorary Alderman, an award given to people who have provided “outstanding services” as councillors.

The term "father of the council" is used to describe the longest serving member.
