Parts of the A120 are being closed at night until September while National Highways refresh road markings and carry out upgrades.
Closures will be carried out in stages, and the first will begin on 24 June for the eastbound stretch, between Dunmow south Interchange and Blake End Interchange, in Braintree, Essex.
Upgrades to the road will be carried out between 20:00 and 06:00, weather conditions permitting.
National Highways said the work was "essential, as it will increase the life expectancy of the road and make journeys safer for motorists".
Expected closure dates
Monday 24 June to Wednesday 10 July: A120 Eastbound between Dunmow South Interchange and Blake End Interchange
Thursday 11 July to Thursday 8 August: A120 Eastbound between Bassingbourne Roundabout and Dunmow South Interchange
Friday 9 August to Tuesday 27 August: A120 Westbound between Dunmow West Interchange and Priory Wood Roundabout
Wednesday 28 August to Monday 2 September: A120 Eastbound between Dunmow South Interchange and Panner’s Great Notley Interchange
Work on the A120 road around Braintree will include replacing safety barrier, road signs, road studs (cat's eyes), road lines and resurfacing.
From Panner’s Great Notley Interchange to Mark Farm, a new central reservation safety barrier would be installed along with new signs and a new road surface on the eastbound side.
National Highways said: "The work here is essential, as it will increase the life expectancy of the road and make journeys safer for motorists.
"We’ll make the most of the road closures by carrying out as much work as possible. This will reduce the need for us to have more road closures in the near future."
They added that work on the road will be carried out in two phases. Phase one was completed during 2023 and phase two will be done during 2024.
