Man dies and driver arrested after 'tragic incident'

A man in his 50s has died after being hit by a vehicle in Swindon.

Officers were called to the incident in Upham Road at the junction with South View Avenue at about 17:40 BST on Monday.

The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 30s, has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving. He has been taken into custody for questioning.

Det Supt Charlotte Tucker, of Wiltshire Police, said: “This is a tragic incident where a man has lost his life in a collision with a vehicle, and our thoughts are with his family at this devastating time."

She added that there will be an increased police presence in the area to provide "community reassurance".

Officers have urged any witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them.
