Access to a tip and recycling centre in the north of the Isle of Man is set to be reduced from next month after a local authority withdrew its funding for it.

The Northern Civic Amenity Site, on Bride Road in Ramsey, will move from being open seven days a week to five from 1 July.

In April, the board that runs the facility gave the Department of Infrastructure notice to terminate its lease after Bride Commissioners withdrew its proportion of funding.

The committee said it had now been forced to take the "hard decision" to close the site on Mondays and Sundays as a result.

The site had been run by a joint committee made up of representatives of the Ramsey, Ballaugh, Lezayre, Garff, Andreas, Jurby and Bride local authorities since 2017.

However, Bride withdrew its membership in April.

The authority said it could no longer afford to pay its contribution of £65,000 each year.

'Deepest regret'

While the remaining board membership had committed to running the facility until the end of the financial year, it now needed to make “amendments to the operation of the site”.

In a statement the board said: “Following the withdrawal of Bride from the site earlier this year, the committee have had to make some very hard decisions on the level of service that they are now able to deliver going forward.

“It is with the deepest regret that the committee wish to inform the public that they are going to have to reduce the number of operational days that the site is open, from seven days to five days.”

The changes would see “no reduction or restriction in the availability of the re-use area”, it added.
