Work has started to create a new events space and car park on derelict land in a Nottinghamshire town centre.

The site to the rear of Lloyds bank in Fox Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, was cleared of vegetation back in 2021 and has stood empty since.

But now it is home to diggers and workers breaking ground on what Ashfield District Council says will be a “flexible outdoor space”.

A 41-space car park is also included in the scheme.

As well as an area for events and pop-up markets, the council’s aim is to create an attractive link between Asda and the town centre with new lighting, CCTV and tree and hedge planting.

The River Idle, which runs through the back of the site which was once home to Sutton-in-Ashfield Conservative Club, will also be cleaned and restored as a focal point.

Lindum Group is working on the project with Ashfield District Council.

Managing director of Lindum Group Kevin Damarell said: “The works will make a huge difference to the town centre, and ultimately provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.”

As well as the Fox Street scheme, work will start on Portland Square in June.

The new look square will feature two raised lawns with built-in seating, lighting, planting and trees.

CCTV cameras, street lighting and new flooring will also be installed.

Both sites are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
