Plans for a new entrance hub Laxey Wheel have been criticised by a Manx historian for not being in keeping with the style of the structure.

Charles Guard said the proposals were "inappropriate for the majesty and elegance of a 170-year-old Victorian masterpiece".

In a video posted online, he criticised plans by Manx National Heritage (MNH) to replace the current hub at the landmark heritage site.

MNH has declined to comment.

The plans include construction of a "lightweight" building made from insulated panels, which would be divided into two areas, to replace the existing kiosk and turnstile.

Mr Guard has instead called for a "sensitive architect" to be employed to produce a "discreet" design.

Describing the design of the new hub as "jarring" against the backdrop of the wheel, Mr Guard said that something of a "modest cost" using Manx stone could be used to replace the current facilities.

He said: "Just because it looks modern doesn't mean that it fits in."

"I'm a great supporter of Manx National Heritage, that's why I was so surprised to see this aberration."

He called for members of Tynwald to "look at this again and try and find a financing package".

"It's a once in a generation chance to get this right and do something we can all be proud of", he added.
