New surf hut opens for life saving club in Croyde

The Croyde Surf Life Saving Club has been leased land by the National Trust for the next 49 years

A new hut has been opened for a life saving surf club in north Devon, leaders say.

The Croyde Surf Life Saving Club, based near Baggy Point car park, said the hut was twice the size of its old one.

The club trains adults and children to develop the the ability to enjoy water safely, and acts as a voluntary lifeguard service.

It said it had been fundraising "for decades", and had been leased land by the National Trust for the next 49 years.

Ben Byrom, club chairman, said it would provide a base for future "generations of nippers".

He said: "Previous committees started raising money years ago for this hut - duck races, fundraising and all the usual stuff that they do.

"We managed to kick off with £40,000 that we already had in the pot, and we've managed to raise the last £60,000 over the last three years."
