Scarborough will host a festival of music and food this weekend, set against a backdrop of two historic sailing ships.

Seafest will take place on the town's West Pier, with live music headlined by local band The Feens, as well as displays from some of the region's top chefs.

The Galeón Andalucía - a replica of a 17th Century Spanish galleon - and the restored Nancy Blackett, which once belonged to Swallows and Amazons author Arthur Ransome, will be on show in the harbour.

The free festival has been running for more than 20 years and is organised by North Yorkshire Council.

A firework display will take place on Saturday night, followed by a Northern Soul and Motown party.

The council’s executive member for culture and art, Simon Myers, said: "Scarborough’s seafaring heritage is second to none and provides the perfect backdrop for the music and food that will be on offer at this year’s Seafest."

Headliners The Feens have previously played the Isle of Wight Festival, and supported bands James and Cast.

Lead singer Freddie Schmuck said: "We first played Seafest when we were in our infancy, back in 2018, and we were just finding our feet.

“We thought it would be nice to come back as a more mature band.

"We’ve got a lot more songs under our belt and more experience and it’s great to be able to headline the event this year.”

Meanwhile, visitors can hear about Britain’s first large-scale offshore seaweed farm at the SeaGrown centre in Scarborough's harbour.

Chef Chris Hobson said: "I want to show people just how versatile seaweed is and what it can add when it comes to the food we eat.

"We use it in everything from sausages, to tapas, to barbecues and I am also going to be making a marmalade using locally produced gin.

"Seafest will bring people to Scarborough and provides a great opportunity to showcase what we do and encourage more and more people to look at what we have in the sea around us."
