About 450 workers at the Dounreay nuclear power complex in Caithness are being balloted on strike action in a pay dispute.

Unite said members employed by Magnox Limited will vote the proposed industrial action.

The union said the dispute had arisen from what it called an "inadequate" 4.5% pay offer.

Site operator Dounreay, which Magnox is part of, said the union's decision was disappointing, but added it was only right the workers had their say.

Dounreay was opened near Thurso in Caithness as an experimental nuclear power site in the 1950s.

The site is now in the process of being decommissioned and closed down.

Workers involved in the pay dispute include chemical and electrical engineers, craft technicians and safety advisors.
