Epsom Downs dumping 'weed-infested eyesore'

The Epsom Civic Society says that dumping on Epsom Downs has become more prevalent "over the past few years"

A residents' group says piles of dumped material on Epsom Downs are being left to rot, turning parts of the historic racecourse into "weed-infested eyesores".
Nick Lock, from the Epsom Civic Society claims the problem has worsened in recent years, and some of the deposits have been left untouched for "a number of years" despite promises they would be removed.
The group is due to raise the issue at an Epsom and Ewell Borough Council committee meeting on Monday.
Mr Lock said the materials are often spoils from the racing gallops which are used for race horse training.
The society said one large pile near the nine-furlong gallop was cleared after it was reported to the Epsom and Walton Downs Consultative Committee, which oversees the use and enjoyment of the Downs.
But it says other sites, including the seventh furlong car park and an area behind the Derby start, remain affected.
The council has been contacted for comment.
