A man who broke into a town hall and stole cheque books, a bottle of prosecco and a cake has been jailed.

Robert Fitzjohn, 44, of Deerfield Road in March, Cambridgeshire, broke into March Town Hall between 17:30 BST on 15 April and 08:30 on 16 April.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary said he smashed a window to access an office where he searched through a safe and a cupboard before stealing cheque books, bank cards, a bottle of prosecco and a small safe.

He appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Wednesday where he was jailed for two years after pleading guilty to burglary and for breaching a suspended sentence.

During the incident Fitzjohn used bits of a drill to break into another office and stole a cake and £17 from the till of the coffee shop.

He left through a fire exit and police found his DNA on the drill bits.

PC Rachael Copeland, said: "Fitzjohn knew exactly what he was doing by burgling March Town Hall and caused about £2,000-worth of damage in the process so it’s good news he’s behind bars.

"Tackling burglary, where it occurs at a home or in this case, a town hall, is a force priority and we will do everything we can to put burglars in front of the courts."
