Workers at a waste plant played cat noises over their loudspeakers to lure a kitten out of its hiding place.

The tortoiseshell kitten was spotted in the tipping hall at the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility at Javelin Park near the M5 motorway.

The company said workers played loud kitten noises in that part of the building, and created a safe path for the young female to use before she was lured into the reception area of the giant facility.

She was pronounced fit and healthy after a visit to the vets, and after no owners were found after a social media appeal, one of the company's staff and his partner adopted her.

General manager Rob Hayward said they do not expect to find kittens at their facility but said, "due to our vigilant processes and procedures we were able to spot and rescue the cat."

He added: "We're glad to hear she is doing well in a very comfy home."

The kitten has been given the name Callie by her new owners.

The enormous recycling and incineration site cost £600m and opened in 2019, with the capacity to process 190,000 tonnes of household waste that cannot be recycled or reused.
