Vision Zero South West said designated drivers could get free soft drinks across more than 200 pubs in December

More than 200 pubs across Devon and Cornwall are offering designated drivers a free soft drink in December.

Vision Zero South West said the Lift Legend scheme aimed to "prevent incidents of drink-driving" during the festive period.

The road safety partnership said last year 419 drivers involved in road traffic collisions in Devon and Cornwall failed roadside breathalyser tests for alcohol.

It said: "Designated drivers simply let the bartender know that they are a Lift Legend for the night and, when purchasing their first soft drink, they will receive a voucher for a free one."

'None for the road'

Vision Zero said there was a total of 1,946 arrests for drink-driving in the region last year, with 1,429 arrests so far this year.

Adrian Leisk, head of road safety at Devon and Cornwall Police, said alcohol affects everyone differently and it was "impossible to know exactly how many drinks will put you over the limit".

"The only way you can be absolutely sure that you are safe to drive is by not drinking at all beforehand," he said.

"Have 'none for the road' and make the most of the free drinks being offered by our fantastic Lift Legend venues."

'Long-term impact'

Chair of Vision Zero and Police and Crime Commissioner for the region Alison Hernandez warned of the consequences of drink-driving.

She said: "If you are convicted of drink-driving you can expect an automatic one-year driving ban, penalty points on your license, a hefty fine and a criminal record.

"There’s also the long-term impact to consider. If you drive for work, you could lose your job and your livelihood."

Andrew Turner, chief operating officer at St Austell Brewery, said the company welcomed thousands of guests through its 45 pubs across the south west and was "delighted" to be supporting the scheme.

"As well as offering free soft drinks to designated drivers, our staff are also happy to call guests a taxi or advise on local bus and train times wherever possible," Mr Turner said.

"Here’s to a happy and safe Christmas."
