Police are investigating after a masked man broke into a mosque in Huddersfield.

The suspect forced his way into the Markazi Jamia Masjid Riza & Islamic Centre on Halifax Old Road, Birkby, at about 03:20 BST, West Yorkshire Police said.

The force said the man, who was wearing all black clothing and a hooded coat, had broken in through a door before unsuccessfully attempting to steal property from inside.

Insp Nicholas Kitson said: "This break-in has clearly caused distress to members of the mosque as would any such offence at a place of religious worship."

Councillor Imran Safdar for Crosland Moor and Netherton said people had been left in a "state of shock".

"Many members of my community and friends/allies are deeply saddened and angered that a Huddersfield mosque has been deliberately damaged in the early hours," he said.

"Masjid Riza Birkby is a peaceful place of worship with a proven track record of assisting good causes here in the UK."

He and Insp Kitson have both appealed for anyone with relevant footage or information to get in touch with police.
