A 12-year-old girl has been arrested following an alleged attack involving a pair of scissors on a member of staff at a school.

West Mercia Police said it was called to Newport Girls' High School Academy in Shropshire at 14:25 GMT on Friday.

The force said the victim suffered minor injuries. The child was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and released on bail.

The school said it was "an isolated incident" involving a pupil and a member of staff.

Adam Jones, the headteacher, said the staff member had received hospital treatment and been discharged.

He said the school was assisting the police force with its inquiries and the school took the "safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff very seriously".

He said there would be additional support for any pupil or staff member who required it.
