A "serious" road traffic collision has closed a major road in North Yorkshire, police said.

The crash occurred on the A61 near Bishop Monkton, between Harrogate and Ripon on Monday.

In a social media post shared on Monday evening, officers said the road was "currently closed" and urged drivers to avoid the area "while emergency services remain at the scene".

North Yorkshire Police did not reveal if anyone had been injured as a result of the crash, or provide an exact time for the incident.

However, it said it was "working to reopen the road as soon as possible".

The force was approached by the BBC for further information.
